1.     Chapter 16  명사절

 

1. 명사절이란?

: 명사의 기능을 하는 절로 명사의 기본 기능인 주어, 목적어, 보어로 사용된다.

 

2. 명사절 접속사의 종류

: 명사절을 이끄는 접속사는 크게 10가지가 있는데, 이중 what, who, which가 이끄는 절은 주어나 목적어 등이 빠진 불완전한 절을 이끄는 접속사(즉, what, who, which가 빠진 성분을 보완해 줌)이고 나머지 that, whether, if, when, where, why, how는 뒤에 완전한 형태의 절을 이끄는 접속사이다.

 

1)    불완전한 절을 이끄는 명사절 접속사

– 의문대명사 what, who, which 등

 

a. what

 

What the actor fails to transmit immediately is lost forever to the audience.

(what절은 문장에서 주어 역할, what은 절 내에서 목적어 역할을 함)

We decide what is important or trivial in life.

(what절은 문장에서 목적어 역할, what은 절 내에서 주어의 역할을 함)

Get off your high horse and listen to what others say.

(what절은 전치사 to의 목적어, what은 절 내에서 목적어 역할을 함)

 

b. 의문대명사

 

Who will go with us is important.

Confirm who is likely to come to the meeting.

You may choose which of the books you like best.

 

2)    완전한 절을 이끄는 명사절 접속사
           – that, whether, if, 의문부사(when, where, why, how..)

 

a. that

  : ‘~라는 것’이라는 의미로 사실/단정을 나타낸다

 

That he passed the test is unbelievable.

= It is unbelievable that the passed the test.

We heard that Don got a job.

I agree that he tried hard. Nevertheless, the fact remains that he has not finished the job on time.

 

b. whether / if

: ‘~인지, 아닌지’라는 의미이며, 의문사 없는 의문문이 문장 내로 들어가 간접의문문이 된 형태이다.

 

Whether the plan will succeed depends on a number of imponderables.
The schedule indicated if the teams would be playing in the final game.

 

[주의]

If the plan will succeed depends on a number of imponderables. (X)

   (If 절은 주어로 사용될 수 없다.)

Put me out of my misery - tell me if or not I've passed! (X)

  (if 바로 뒤에는 or not을 붙일 수 없다. 단, whether은 가능)

 

c. 의문부사

: 의문대명사와 함께 의문사를 포함한 의문문이 문장 내로 들어가 간접의문문으로 바뀐 구조이다.

 

When the season starts is determined by the weather.

The manual shows how the device should be built.

I don’t remember where he stayed.

Why the condition of the patient deteriorated so rapidly was not explained.

 

[참고] 의문부사는 절에서 부사의 역할을 하기에 의문부사가 빠져도 완전한 문장이 되지만, 의문대명사의 경우 절에서 명사/대명사를 대신하기에 이것이 빠질 경우 불완전한 절이 되는 것이다.
